Short curriculum

My name is Wijnand Schepens. I was born in 1973.

I studied Physics Engineering at the University of Ghent, Belgium. I graduated in 1996. My master thesis was titled "Black Holes: Quantum Effects and the Information Paradox"

I did a PhD in physics at the Department of Mathematical Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Science, Ghent University (Belgium), under the promotorship of Prof. Dr. H. Verschelde, about protein folding. My doctoral thesis was titled "Effective diffused potential and development of a programming framework for molecular simulations". This included research on high performance computing in C++ using advanced template techniques.

After my PhD, in 2001, I switched to computer science. Currently, I am an assistent in the Department of Computer Science (vakgroep Informatica) at the Faculty of Applied Engineering Sciences (departement industriële wetenschappen), part of University College Ghent (Hogeschool Gent).

I'm doing research about symbolical music representations and algorithms. Teaching subjects include algorithms, OO-programming, analysis&design, web technology, GUIs. Furthermore, I guide students during their master thesis.

Since 2005, I'm involved in , a website for musicians to publish and collaborate on lead sheets. I'm responsible for the manipulation of the music data.

My current research is largely reflected in jFonia, which is a Java framework for the representation and manipulation of symbolical music. This includes transposition, quantization, pitch spelling, query, similarity, import from and export to MIDI and several score-formats, visualization and editing, harmonic analysis, etc. Most of it is still in progress.

Personaf stuff

I live in Zwalm, Belgium, with my beautiful wife and three fantastic children. This picture was taken in the summer of 2007.

I like to sing, especially renaissance music. My regular choir is in Ghent, but from time to time I sing (sang) in other choirs, such as Ex Tempore, KoorAcademie,Goeyvaerts Consort... Here's an action picture. I play some piano (mostly improvising). I'm very interested in harmony, counterpoint, music theory and jazz.

One of my major passions is languages, both natural and programming languages.

Further intrests include physics, mathematics, cognition, evolutionary biology, paleoanthropology, philosophy, nature, ...

And I also play some indoor football.
